Import Export Code (IEC Code)
Import Export (IE) code India is the registration of import and export companies with the Customs Department of India that imports and exports goods from India. IE code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Government of India.

IE Code application should be made to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade along with necessary supporting documents. Once the application is submitted, DGFT will issue the IE code to the institution within 15-20 working days or less.
Validity of IE Code
IE code registration is permanent registration that is valid for a lifetime. Hence, there will be no hassle in updating, filing, and renewal of IE Code Registration. This is valid until the business ceases to exist or the registration is canceled or surrendered. Also, unlike tax registrations like GST registration or PF registration, the importer or exporter is not required to file any filing or comply with any other compliance requirements like annual filing.
IE Code Exemption
An Import Export Code is required for the import of any type of goods by a business. However, the following categories of persons are exempted from obtaining the IE Code:
- Importers and exports by the Central Government or agencies or undertakings for defense purposes or other specified lists under the Foreign Trade (Exemption from application of Rules in certain cases) Order, 1993.
- Import or export of goods for personal use.
